New Topaz Photo AI version 2.4 released

Topaz Labs officially released Photo AI version 2.4:

A new workflow

Image processing is the core of our application. We separated the tools and allowed them to run in any order, to put you in control. Now, it’s much easier to see how your image is improved step by step, and we hope this transparency leads to more creative outcomes. You can start editing a photo by adding just the enhancements you want -OR- run autopilot to analyze your image and start with our recommendations. Either way, you can edit, add, and remove enhancements as you go.

Control the processed area for each enhancement.

You decide which parts of the image are processed. The new design allows you to select which areas of the image are processed by each enhancement. Some examples of how you can use the new selection feature is adjusting the color balance of your subject, or selectively denoising only the background. The theme of this release is putting more control in your hands to shape images the way you want.

Goodbye to toggles, hello stacked enhancements.

Now you can use as many enhancements on your image as you want. For example, you can sharpen your subject and background with separate enhancements to be able to control the effect individually. We hope this unlocks new creative freedom and we can’t wait to see what y’all make! There are a few exceptions to this feature but we will continue to work on enabling the flexibility of stacking enhancements in future releases.

Customizable interface

We’re just taking our first steps toward customization in this release. You can now drag the enhancement panels out and place them where they work best for you. The team is working hard on more interface organization features and you can expect to see greater flexibility in future releases.

We’ve revamped how filters are processed to make Photo AI more responsive.

Creating a flexible processing order allowed us to dramatically improve the efficiency of processing:

  • Preview updates faster when new edits are added
  • Switching between your current edit and previous edits is much faster
  • Background processing is enabled for computers with 24GB or more RAM when preview is updated (processor is not idle)

All this means editing your image feels faster compared to previous versions.

Crop it like it’s hot!

We know it’s been a long time coming. We’ve overhauled our crop tool to make it more responsive and added critical features like straightening. We’ve also fixed quite a few bugs. The new crop tool loads and saves much faster, and no longer runs Autopilot after for a snappy experience.

The Remove tool can now be used like other filters.

In the new workflow, you can use Remove at any point. It will lock previous edits, which is necessary to maintain consistent output from our generative AI. But other edits can be added after so it does not disrupt your image processing. We updated the controls so they are easier to use. Remove can also be easily edited or deleted from the stack.

What’s next

We are committed to adding new features that will reshape your favorite enhancing tool. Some of the most important work we’re doing:

  • Adding new tools and enhancements
  • Enabling more flexibility in how enhancements work
  • New customization features
  • Improving processing performance

DxO PureRAW 4 released

In addition to the new PureRaw 4, DxO also released PureRAW version 4 with updated AI tools, new features, and workflow enhancements (available also on Amazon):

  • Noise reduction equivalent to over ISO 2.5 stops
  • Extra image sharpness and detail, even from older cameras
  • DxO Optics Modules — industry-leading lens profiles
  • Seamless integration with the Adobe Lightroom Classic plugin
  • Smart workflow with real-time previews, widget, and batch processing and renaming

What’s new in DxO PureRAW 4.0:

DeepPRIME XD2:
DeepPRIME XD2 surpasses DeepPRIME XD, leveraging advanced AI and deep learning for superior image demosaicing and denoising processing. This improved version delivers more exceptional results, especially at higher ISO, extracting finer details while maintaining high-quality noise reduction and lowering texture artifacts. Note: currently DeepPRIME XD2 only supports Bayer images; X-Trans RAW files are not compatible. PureRAW will revert to DeepPRIME XD for these specific RAW files.

Advanced controls for Denoising:
When selecting HQ, PRIME, DeepPRIME, or DeepPRIME XD2, users can now access correction settings through the "Advanced" subsection of the palette. These controls will give more control and help finetune the resulting image by setting the denoising strength, the level of details retrieved from the RAW data, and other specific aspects for each of the processing methods.

Processing Preview:
Explore the impact of corrections on your images with our new “Process with Preview” feature. Whether you are working in standalone mode or using PureRAW as a Lightroom plugin, you can access a dedicated viewer and see the result of your adjustments directly before processing your images. Set any setting directly within the palettes and preview the result in the main window, giving you the utmost level of control.

Batch renaming:
Effortlessly organize and customize your processed images with PureRAW 4's new batch renaming feature. Choose from a selection of predefined renaming presets for quick and convenient naming or compose your own using free text and available tokens. Apply your chosen renaming scheme to all photos in the processing batch, streamlining your workflow and ensuring consistency in file names.

Updated Processing Settings Window:
PureRAW 4 introduces an updated processing window design, offering a sleek and intuitive interface. Experience unparalleled control and precision in refining your images before final processing.

Improved Lens softness:
Our exclusive Lens Softness Compensation technology benefits from the latest algorithmic improvements, resulting in crisper images than before, with fewer ringing effects in highly contrasted details.

Smart Lighting option for Jpeg output:
The JPEG output format now includes the option to enable or disable the Smart Lighting technology, which optimizes the dynamic range by automatically opening up the shadows and recovering highlights. The strength of this effect is customizable according to the user’s preferences.

Daemon instance:
By activating a daemon instance of PureRAW in your system tray, you can conveniently open the application whenever an SD card or external volume is plugged in and detected. Additionally, you can easily track the progress of your processing or directly access the Standalone application.

Don’t expect the Fujifilm X100VI camera to be in stock anytime soon

Many (all?) companies got into the habit of announcing product shortages "becuase of high demand". For the most part, I consider this to be a marketing strategy, but in the case of the new Fujifilm X100VI camera, I believe the hype is real after getting some feedback from retailers - the X100VI demand is very high and it exceeded all expectations. Today FujiFilm Japan issued an official notice about it:

"Please note that since the announcement, we have received a far greater response than expected, so please note that it may take some time for the product to be delivered. We will do our best to increase production so that we can deliver the products as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding."

All Ricoh GR cameras are out of stock, temporary suspension of orders, new model coming?

A few months ago a Ricoh GR designer teased a new GR announcement. We have not seen any new GR-related developments since. There was no news even at the CP+ show in Japan last month. Ricoh Japan now announced a new temporary suspension of GR camera orders because of supply shortages (again). Here are the impacted models:

A quick check online shows that most Ricoh GR camera models are out of stock or back-ordered (with the exceptions of WEX in the UK):

Maybe Ricoh is clearing their inventory before they announce a new GR model?
