CIPA 2024 camera shipment outlook

CIPA published their 2024 camera shipment outlook:

2024 Outlook on the Shipment by Product-Type Concerning Cameras and Related Goods

The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA: President Hiroyuki Ikegami) has announced the outlook on the shipment by product-type concerning cameras and related goods for the 2024.

1. Track Record of Digital Camera Shipments 2023

While total shipments of digital cameras were 96.4% those of the previous year, and the mainstay “interchangeable-lens” type cameras were 101.2% and the leading mainstay “mirrorless” cameras were 118.6%, a two-digit growth.

In 2023 (January to December cumulative), the total shipments of digital cameras were 7,720,505 units, 96.4% of the previous year. (The attached “Outlook” table shows the figures in units of 10,000.)

However, shipments of interchangeable-lens digital cameras, which account for 78% of total shipments, were 5,998,913 units, 101.2% of the previous year. Moreover, those of the leading mainstay, mirrorless cameras, which account for 81% of interchangeable-lens digital cameras, reached 4,832,813 units, 118.6% of the previous year.

Now that an enormous number of people are immediately becoming well-versed in photos and heavy photo users by taking a lot of photos continuously as soon as they have a smartphone in hand, interchangeable-lens digital cameras and mirrorless cameras are a receptacle for the newly sprouted desire to “take better pictures” and “take pictures that I couldn’t take before.”

Shipments to China and other regions: more than 100% of the previous years, even for digital cameras in total

Shipments of mirrorless cameras were more than 100% of the previous years in all regions. However, as for those of digital cameras in total, there were clear differences among regions.

Shipments to Japan were 98.1%, to Asia (except for Japan and China) 98.2%, to Europe 80.8% and to the Americas 94.3%.

In contrast, shipments to China were 124.7%, and to other regions 104.0%. As for China, while there were some negative reports on general economic trends in 2023, the digital camera market performed well or quite well.

As decreases in shipments to Japan and Asia (except for Japan and China) were less than 2%, total shipments to Japan, China, and Asia (except for Japan and China), or shipments to all Asian destinations, now account for almost half, 46.1%, of total shipments worldwide.

Although shipments of digital cameras in total were less than the previous year, it should be noted that by category, mirrorless cameras remain popular and that by region, China and other regions are gaining momentum.

2. Shipments of Interchangeable Lenses in 2023

Total shipments of interchangeable lenses were 99.1% of the previous year, a slight decrease. Shipments of lenses for cameras of a format smaller than 35mm were 100.1%.

The total shipments of interchangeable lenses were 9,638,752 units, 99.1% of the previous year. While the figure slightly decreased, it exceeded 1.6 times that of interchangeable-lens digital cameras (body only) (for every interchangeable-lens digital camera, 1.6 units of interchangeable lenses were shipped in 2023). They continued to make a presence as another mainstay product that determines the range of expression with digital cameras.

By category, lenses for cameras of a format smaller than 35mm, such as APS-C and Micro Four Thirds for lightweight and compact-sized interchangeable-lens digital cameras, were shipped in higher quantities than the previous year.

3. Shipping Outlook 2024

Total digital camera shipments in 2024 (from January to December cumulative) are expected to be 7.41 million units, which is 96.0% of the previous year, including 860,000 units or 94.5% to Japan, and 6.55 million units or 96.2% to countries other than Japan.

By category, the total shipments of interchangeable-lens digital cameras are expected to be 5.89 million units, which is 98.2% of the previous year, including 510,000 units or 98.1% to Japan, and 5.38 million units or 98.2% to countries other than Japan, and that of digital cameras with built-in lens is 1.52 million units or 88.4%, including 350,000 units or 89.7% to Japan, and 1.17 million units or 88.0% to countries other than Japan.

As for interchangeable-lens digital cameras, it is 9.57 million units or 99.3% of the previous year, including 1.03 million units or 100.0% to Japan, and 8.54 million units or 99.3% to countries other than Japan.

As the market experienced a slowdown slightly toward the end of 2023, this outlook is less than bullish. However, digital cameras are items closely connected to “outdoor demands” and “outing demands.” In association with the current trend breaking away from the COVID-19 pandemic, further growth is expected.

Canon is in talks with third-party lens manufacturers about commercializing and opening the RF mount: “There are no restrictions”

The Japanese publication Mynavi posted online an interview where Tsuyoshi Tokura (Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of the Canon Imaging Group) confirmed that Canon is in talks with third-party lens manufacturers about commercializing and opening the RF mount – here is the recap by digicame-info:

  • On February 22nd, the first day of CP+2024, Tsuyoshi Tokura, senior managing executive officer and deputy manager of Canon's Imaging Group, who is in charge of Canon's camera business, responded to a press interview.
  • Speculation is flying around on social media that ``Canon seems to have a policy of not opening up the RF mount to other companies,'' but a person in charge of Canon's camera business said, ``Canon is communicating with third-party manufacturers.'' .The depth of communication is probably more than half of the way (to commercialization).'' It is not a dream that AF-compatible RF mount lenses will be released by talented third parties such as Sigma and Tamron.
  • Speculation and rumors are flying around among photography fans, such as ``Is the company's policy not to open up RF mounts to other companies?'' and "Are there restrictions such as AF lenses are not allowed but MF lenses are allowed?'' When I asked these questions to Mr. Tokura, he immediately replied, ``Canon is communicating with third-party manufacturers regarding RF mount lenses'' and "There are no restrictions.'' He quickly denied the speculations among photography fans. He also said, "Communication with third-party manufacturers is deeper than it was in the early days,'' and revealed that they are proceeding with more active interactions than before.
  • When asked when RF mount products will be released from third parties, he declined to give a clear answer. Still, he answered: "The depth of communication is probably more than halfway (toward commercialization).'' He indicated that negotiations are progressing smoothly.

Previous coverage of third-party lenses for Canon RF mount:

Viltrox: “We have been told by Canon to stop selling all RF mount products”

Canon Germany on third-party Viltrox lenses: “Canon believes that these products infringe their patent and design rights and has therefore requested the company to stop all activities that infringe Canon’s intellectual property rights”

Neurapix: a new AI start-up from Germany that learns from previously edited images and applies individual’s editing style to new photos in Adobe Lightroom Classic

Neurapix is a new start-up from Goettingen in Germany that has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) known as the SmartPreset. It learns from previously edited images and can apply the individual's editing style to new photos in Adobe Lightroom Classic at lightning speed. This is particularly beneficial for photographers who frequently shoot large events such as weddings, as it allows for significant time savings.

Neurapix recently released their plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic.

PhotoRumours readers will get 2,000 free image edits if they register via that link.

Additional information:

General

The SmartPreset, as opposed to a traditional static preset for Lightroom, is based on artificial intelligence. This allows the SmartPreset to understand and learn from a photographer's individual editing style through his/her past edits. As a result, it can consistently apply the learned style to future images in Lightroom, especially in various lighting situations. This capability was previously only achievable through tedious manual slider adjustments. The SmartPreset is able to quickly set all necessary sliders for a specific editing style, resulting in a significant time savings of around 90% for photographers. Despite this automation, photographers still maintain full control over the editing process and have the ability to fine-tune the slider values as needed for their RAW files. Additionally, the SmartPreset regularly analyzes post-processing corrections and continually improves its understanding of how final images should appear.

In mid-January, the Gottingen-based company announced that it can now process 1,000 images per minute using a SmartPreset.

PhotoRumours readers will get 2,000 free image edits if they register via that link. After that, the cost is $0.03 per photo. For example, the editing of 500 images from a wedding would typically cost only $15.

To get there is very easy: After installing the Neurapix plugin, the photographer selects all photos from an unedited photo event in Adobe Lightroom Classic and click on “Create SmartPreset” via the menu (Library > Plug-in Extras) and selects “Kickstart”. The Neurapix algorithm then automatically selects 20 representative images for the event, encompassing a wide range of lighting situations and settings. In the background, all event photos are already being uploaded to the secured Neurapix server.

The photographer now edits the 20 representative photos in his/her own style and then clicks on "Kickstart" again. After naming their style (the future name of the SmartPreset), the 20 edited images are uploaded. On the Neurapix server, all event photos are then edited in the newly learned style and ready for download in just a few minutes. After potential manual corrections, the photo event is ready for use.

Reduce your photo editing time in Lightroom by 90%

Do you want to shoot more and edit less? Spend more time with your family, friends, and the things you really like? Or maybe expand your photo business? Then this AI plugin can revolutionize your workflow. The more pictures you have to edit and deliver in a short time for your clients, the more valuable it gets!

German company Neurapix has developed artificial intelligence that is able to learn your individual image editing style from previously edited images and apply it within Adobe Lightroom Classic. This allows you to have large numbers of photos edited in your own style at lightning speed, resulting in significant time savings of 90%.

One of the things photographers like most about Neurapix: it is seamlessly integrated into their classic workflow. You don't have to switch to another software but only install the Neurapix plugin via the Adobe Store once you have opened your account. After that, every single step happens within Adobe Lightroom Classic. The only difference to your old workflow: you select a dynamic SmartPreset instead of your static preset.

Consistency is key: Why SmartPresets have an edge over normal presets

The SmartPreset, as opposed to a traditional preset for Lightroom Classic, is based on artificial intelligence. This allows it to understand the situation and conditions the image was taken in. As a result, it can apply a very consistent look in your individually trained style - especially in various lighting situations! Previously, this was only achievable through tedious manual slider adjustments.

Despite this automation, you still maintain full control over the editing process and have the ability to fine-tune the slider values as needed for your RAW files. Manual adjustments are relatively rare though.

Train your AI with only 20 edited images!

Neurapix has just released a new AI training option called "Kickstart" which allows you to get your own SmartPreset even faster in only a few minutes. After installing the Neurapix plugin, you upload all photos from an event that you want to edit through the "Kickstart" feature. An algorithm analyzes the event and selects 20 representative images, encompassing a wide range of different lighting situations and settings.

You then edit those 20 photos in the style you want (you can also easily create unlimited new SmartPresets very quickly this way). Neurapix will analyze your style and apply it to all other pictures of your photo event. You will receive your results in just a few minutes. After potential manual corrections, your event is ready for use and with one more click, you can finalize your SmartPreset.

The more often you use your SmartPreset, the better it will get in understanding your editing style. Feel free to give feedback on the results and your AI will be re-trained regularly.

Fair pricing and a maximum of flexibility

The AI training to create your personal SmartPreset is always free, as are regular improvements made to it by the Neurapix AI. Additionally, each user is provided with three free default SmartPresets for direct use. More SmartPresets from top photographers can be found in the Neurapix Store. The first 1,000 edits (regular test phase) are always free as well.

Get 2,000 FREE EDITS from PhotoRumours to try Neurapix

After the test period, you can choose between two pricing options. With the "Pay-per-Picture" model you only pay for the photos you edit ($0.03 per picture for the first 1,000 per month, afterward only $0.02). If you shoot a lot of events, the "AI Flat Rate" might be the even better choice for you: Get unlimited edits and your photos in real-time for a capped amount of money (annual deal for $49.95 per month, or monthly rate of $79.95 which can be canceled at any time). Processing will be done locally on your own PC, if you decide on this option.

Neurapix also offers automatic and complimentary straightening of all photos, eliminating the need for manual adjustment of pictures. The new straightening function saves you even more time and comes at $0.01 per photo if you're using the Pay-per-Picture option. In the AI Flat Rate, straightening is included.

Real-time editing and data security guaranteed

You will be impressed by Neurapix's lightning speed: If you're using the Pay-per-Picture option, your images will be uploaded to the company's servers and be edited with a speed of 600 images per minute! By the way, data security is a top priority for Neurapix: All photos transferred for AI training and editing are processed exclusively on Neurapix's own servers in Germany, ensuring the security of all client data. All processes are fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Users of the "AI Flat Rate" get their edited images even faster because all processing is done locally on the photographer's computer so they are independent of upload and download times as well as server capacities. After 20 to 30 seconds, the first few pictures are edited already and you can start your final review right away while the rest of your photos is continuing to be edited.

"At Neurapix, we want to make life easier for photographers," says Simon Diegmann, co-founder and CEO of Neurapix. "We know from them that editing events is very a time-consuming and often tedious task. Neurapix is like a personal editing assistant, but better, faster, and available 24:7. Your SmartPreset delivers your edited photos in exactly the style you want. Also, we're giving photographers a maximum of flexibility offering the different pricing options so they can choose what fits best for them."

DJI is rumored to release a new cinema camera at the 2024 NAB show in Las Vegas (April 14-17, 2024):

According to my sources, the above DJI cinema camera is rumored to be released at the 2024 NAB show in Las Vegas (April 14-17, 2024). It’s a gimbal-less version of the Ronin 4D, with all the features of the original, including IBIS that can be switched on or off by the user. It will also have an updated SSD module with TB3/4 and USB4 for faster offload speeds, and some still image capture features. Can’t wait for the new Fujifilm X100VI camera? Fake it with some stickers… (X100VI starts shipping tomorrow)

Due to the high demand, the new Fujifilm X100VI camera will be back ordered and out of stock for a very long time. Someone in China already thought of a solution - fake stickers that will turn your old X100 camera into an X100VI (or in this case into the new limited-edition X100VI). This will cause some serious problems later on when fake X100VI cameras start showing up on eBay. Btw, the current prices for an X100VI on eBay are over $2,000:

According to some store listings, the new X1000VI should start shipping tomorrow (February 28th):
