New FujiFilm X half-frame digital camera teaser for the diptychs feature

FujiFilm released a new teaser video “Half the Size, Twice the Story” for their upcoming X half-frame digital compact camera, demonstrating the new diptychs feature:

"A diptych is an artwork, often a painting or photograph, consisting of two related panels, usually joined together by a hinge. The panels can be closed like a book and, in the past, were often used to protect the interior paintings. Diptychs can be used to create a visual dialogue between the two images, capture a single moment in time, or explore a theme over time."

Sony quietly announced a new FX3A camera

Sony quietly announced a new Sony FX3A camera with some minor updates. This is the first of the two expected new Sony cameras.

The comparison between the two Sony FX3 camera models can be found here - I couldn't spot any differences.

Here is an AI-generated report of Sony FX3 vs. Sony FX3A :

Recent reports indicate that Sony has released an updated version of the FX3, designated as the FX3A (ILME-FX3A). This is not a major "Mark II" successor but rather a refresh of the existing model, primarily due to component availability. Here's a breakdown of the key differences and similarities:

Key Differences (FX3A vs FX3):

  • LCD Screen: The most significant change is an upgraded rear LCD screen. The original FX3 featured a screen with approximately 1.44 million dots. The new FX3A incorporates a higher-resolution LCD with approximately 2.36 million dots, the same used in the FX30. This should provide a sharper and more detailed image for monitoring and menu navigation.
  • USB Port: Some sources indicate the FX3A features a more standardized USB-C connection, potentially replacing an older USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the original FX3. This aims to improve compatibility with modern accessories and streamline workflows.
  • Included Charger: The FX3A is reported to ship with a dual battery charger (BC-QZ1), an improvement over the single-slot charger that came with the original FX3.
  • Removed Features: Some minor, largely defunct features like the infrared remote function and NFC may have been removed in the FX3A.
  • Excluded Accessories: The FX3A reportedly no longer ships with a USB-C cable or power cord.
  • Price: There are indications that the FX3A might have a higher price point (around $4500 in the USA) due to new tariff rules, though this can vary by region and retailer. Some UK retailers list it around £3,599.00.

In essence:

The Sony FX3A is a minor revision of the FX3, primarily driven by the discontinuation of the original LCD screen. While it offers a noticeably improved display and a dual charger, its fundamental imaging performance and core video features remain unchanged from the well-regarded FX3. If you already own an FX3, the FX3A is unlikely to be a compelling upgrade unless the screen resolution is a critical factor for you. For new buyers, the FX3A will be the current model available, offering the same core benefits with a couple of minor modernizations.

Sigma still committed to Foveon, they are now almost at the final stage of technology development

In a recent interview with Dpreview, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki reiterated his company's commitment to Foveon and confirmed that they are now almost at the final stage of technology development. Here is the recap of the interview:

  • Sigma’s Commitment to Foveon: Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki confirms ongoing development of a full-frame Foveon sensor, despite slow progress, emphasizing his dedication to the project.
  • Development Challenges: The project was moved from the US to Japan, requiring a restart from scratch, which has extended the timeline significantly.
  • Market Stability Concerns: Yamaki notes the camera market appears stable but warns that positive sales figures may mask long-term issues.
  • Foveon Sensor Benefits: Yamaki highlights the unique image quality of Foveon sensors, particularly in color gradation due to crosstalk between RGB layers, which he believes offers a distinct advantage over Bayer sensors.
  • Limitations Acknowledged: Foveon sensors face challenges with noise and low-light performance compared to Bayer sensors, making them less user-friendly and not suitable for all photographers.
  • Niche Appeal: Yamaki acknowledges that even a successful Foveon sensor may not lead to high sales volumes but believes it will still hold significant value for a niche audience.
  • Sigma BF Philosophy: The interview touches on the Sigma BF camera, inspired by the philosophy of "beautiful foolishness," reflecting a design focus on joy and aesthetics in photography.
  • Industry Context: The article mentions other camera industry developments, such as the Nothing Phone 3a’s camera features and a new 50MP OmniVision sensor, but these are not directly tied to Sigma’s efforts.

Coming next: Fujifilm price increase in the US

A reliable source confirmed to me today that Fujifilm has suspended orders for the GFX100RF, X100VI, and X-M5 cameras in the US. It looks like the company will very soon implement significant price increases (in the US only) due to the new tariffs introduced by President Trump, just like Canon and Blackmagic. It is unclear if the new price increase will impact all Fujifilm products or only the suspended models.

As I already mentioned, there will be more price increases to come. If you are planning on purchasing new gear, now would be a good time to do so since I expect more prices to be adjusted in the coming weeks. B&H and Adorama are currently closed for the next 10 days, but you can check our sponsors AmazonPaul's Photo, and Service Photo for your photo equipment needs.

How will the new Trump tariffs impact the camera and lens imports to the US?
