A week or so ago, several websites published stories about Viltrox working on their own digital camera. No, they are not.
Everything started with an interview with Viltrox published by Thephoblographer:
Q: Are you folks also making cameras?
A: As for cameras, while our current focus remains firmly on lens development, we are actively exploring adjacent technologies that enhance the photographic experience. Our commitment is to create a seamless and responsive ecosystem for creators—and we will continue to innovate with that mission in mind.
I contacted several sources and individuals who work for Viltrox – they are not working on a digital camera. They lack the technical know-how and ability to design and produce a serious digital camera from scratch. Here is the official response I got:
What we actually said is that we will continue exploring and developing accessories around cameras — not the camera body itself. This may have led to some misunderstandings among users. Our goal remains the same: to create high-quality photography gear that empowers more creators to express their artistic vision.
The only Chinese company that can pull this up is DJI, and there were already rumors about a new medium-format camera:
Rumors: DJI coming with a mirrorless camera that looks like the Hasselblad X1D
If you recall, there were also rumors about a TTartisan camera a while back, and we all know how that ended up – with a rebranded Fujifilm Instax:

Also, OM System never considered developing a medium format camera – they can hardly create a decent update on their current line. Developing a new camera line from scratch is out of the question.
