Fuji and Canon registered new cameras

Both Fujifilm and Canon registered new cameras in Asia. Canon registered a new DS126965 camera on July 1st. It features dual-band Wi-Fi. This brings Canon’s total registrations for fiscal year 2026 to three new devices: DS126947, DS126973, and DS126965, none of which have corresponding existing models:

Fujifilm now has two registered and not yet announced cameras:

  • Fujifilm FF260001: registered on April 7, 2026, featuring the X-Processor 6 APS-C interface, tri-band Wi-Fi 6, NP-W255 battery, and CMOS Image Sensor.
  • Fujifilm FF260002: registered on July 3, 2026, featuring the X-Processor 6 interface, tri-band Wi-Fi 6, and CMOS Image Sensor – this will probably be the rumored Fujifilm X-T6:

This is the “rumored” Viltrox camera

I have been very skeptical about the previously reported Viltrox camera rumors and rightfully so – here are the first leaked pictures of the Viltrox 1839 Toy Camera:

This adorable little yellow plastic toy camera features a fixed lens, a simple viewfinder, and a retro-striped design with a prominent “1839” marking and a “Vision To Xplore” tagline. Clearly, this is not the interchangeable-lens mirrorless body that has been rumored for months with wild speculations, including possible Nikon Z-mount compatibility:

No, Viltrox is not working on a digital camera

More strange rumors from China: Viltrox to release a mirrorless camera with Nikon Z-mount

Viltrox digital mirrorless camera with Nikon Z-mount

Viltrox digital mirrorless camera with Nikon Z-mount mockups

Fresh rumors circulating in Chinese‑language photography communities suggest that Viltrox may be preparing to enter the camera market with its own mirrorless model, and one of the strongest claims is that it could use the Nikon Z mount.

Viltrox recently joined the L-Mount Alliance, so if they come up with a new camera, L-mount will make much more sense.

Other speculations refer to a recent Viltrox patent filed in China that involves the Nikon Z-mount – could it be that Viltrox designed a mount similar to the Nikon Z-mount but different enough, so they do not get into legal trouble? Some Chinese commenters speculate that:

“If Nikon restricts Viltrox lenses, Viltrox may build its own camera body to avoid dependency.”

Nikon already has an ongoing lawsuit against Viltrox about licensing/royalties for Nikon’s underlying Z-mount technology (additional information). Viltrox has continued releasing Z-mount lenses even during the legal situation. If Nikon is currently litigating against Viltrox over Z-mount-related intellectual property, launching a Viltrox-branded Nikon Z camera would dramatically increase legal exposure.

Rumors about a Viltrox mirrorless camera are not new and have been debunked so far:

No, Viltrox is not working on a digital camera

Why a Nikon Z-mount camera from Viltrox is unlikely:

  • Legal barriers: Nikon is actively litigating Z-mount IP against Viltrox for lenses. A full camera body would require even deeper integration and licensing.
  • Technical/financial scale: Viltrox excels at lenses (strong in AF primes across mounts). Building a competitive mirrorless body (sensor, processor, IBIS, EVF, firmware, etc.) is a completely different and capital-intensive endeavor. No Chinese lens maker has successfully done this at scale recently without major partnerships or rebadging.
  • Business focus: Viltrox continues to aggressively expand its lens lineup (including Z-mount models) rather than pivoting to bodies.

My current estimate is that the “Viltrox Nikon Z camera” story is likely a rumor chain that started from the newly discovered Z-mount patent and then evolved into speculation on Chinese forums. These rumors remain unconfirmed, fragmentary, and not supported by any of my sources.

New: Owlkrown FlexGrip for Fujifilm X100VI cameras

Owlkrown released a new FlexGrip for Fujifilm X100VI cameras (the X100VI is still out of stock!) – here are the details:

  • The Owlkrown FlexGrip for the Fujifilm X100VI was designed to integrate naturally with the camera body, extending the original form of the X100VI into a grip that feels unified, balanced, and complete in the hand. The design follows the geometry of the camera closely, preserving the compact nature of the system while significantly improving handling and stability during everyday shooting.
  • Machined from solid aircraft grade aluminum, the FlexGrip maintains an extremely lightweight construction while delivering the rigidity and precision expected from a professionally machined component. Every surface, radius, and transition was engineered to feel seamless against the body of the camera.
  • An integrated AirTag compartment adds discreet traceability without altering the external profile of the grip. Hidden within the structure, it allows photographers to keep track of their camera system without relying on external accessories or cases.
  • The built in Arca-Swiss compatible profile allows direct tripod mounting without requiring additional plates or adapters. Two integrated 1/4”-20 threaded mounts provide additional flexibility for tripod positioning and accessory mounting depending on shooting style or setup.
  • Inside the grip, a silicone padded interface protects the camera body while creating a secure, vibration resistant fit. The side integrated lug allows attachment of wrist straps or alternative carrying configurations including portrait carry setups.

Some Owlkrown are sold at B&H Photo.

Canon is actively reviving and expanding its PowerShot compact camera lineup

Canon is actively reviving and expanding its PowerShot compact camera lineup in response to renewed market demand, particularly from younger users and social media creators. This shift is driven by easing smartphone dominance, with compacts seen as creative tools and fashion statements rather than just point-and-shoots. Here is a recap from Canon’s report:

Key Insights from Canon’s 2026 Integrated Report

Canon’s official 2026 report (covering 2025 performance) highlights that the camera market contraction due to smartphones has eased. New user segments, especially young people focused on video and social media photography, are driving growth. Compact digital cameras are expanding again as tools that offer capabilities beyond smartphones, with ownership viewed as a cultural/fashion statement among younger generations.

  • The PowerShot V1 (a 2025 video-focused model) is highlighted as a key example of this direction, positioned alongside existing models like the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, SX740 HS, and IXY 650.
  • Canon increased compact camera production in 2025 and plans further expansion. The Imaging Group saw strong sales growth (up 12.5% to over 1 trillion yen), with compacts contributing alongside entry-level mirrorless cameras.
  • Broader strategy: Strengthen products across categories (including compacts) with a focus on video, while maintaining leadership in interchangeable-lens cameras.
  • This aligns with executives noting that current compact buyers are often new customers (not traditional Canon users), so future models will introduce “new technologies or use cases.”

Up to three new Canon PowerShot models are rumored for 2026, including two high-end models and one more mass-market option. These are expected to launch around Q3–Q4 (potentially tied to holiday shopping).
