A new report from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry suggests that digital camera production is showing signs of recovery. Here is a recap of the original report:

• Digital camera production (and camera lenses) had been under long-term pressure from the rise of smartphones, which caused production to start declining around 2008 (video cameras peaked earlier, in 2005, and fell more sharply).
• Production dropped sharply in Q2 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, then fluctuated afterward.
• Clear signs of recovery have appeared since 2025, according to the Mineral and Industrial Production Index.
• Domestic shipments of lens-integrated (compact) cameras have risen for two consecutive years starting in 2024 (CIPA data).
• For lens-exchangeable cameras: the long decline in DSLRs has leveled off; mirrorless cameras fell in 2025 but are now showing an upward trend, pointing to a generational shift toward mirrorless.
• The recent pickup is attributed mainly to stronger demand from younger users for sharing and video content.
• Despite the multi-year structural decline caused by smartphones, digital cameras are finding new life in niches that smartphones do not fully replace (higher image quality, interchangeable lenses, still + video capability).

While overall numbers are improving, the latest CIPA numbers show a slowdown. A good example here is Nikon – they have released only two lenses this year, and it seems that most of their upcoming products are even further delayed.

Also, what the report does not cover is the recent significant increase in prices as a result of the Trump tariffs, memory shortages, and geopolitical instability (Fujifilm is rumored to have another price increase on September 1st; see all recent price increases here):

The Japanese camera marketplace Minna Camera recently published a list of the top 10 used cameras with the biggest price increases for the first half of 2026:

1. Nikon D5600 (2016): +24.1%
2. Sony α7 IV (2021): +11.9%
3. Ricoh GR III (2019): +10.9%
4. Sony α6000 (2014): +10.0%
5. Canon EOS R6 (2020): +9.8%
6. Canon EOS R50 (2023): +8.9%
7. OM System Tough TG-7 (2023): +8.6%
8. Panasonic Lumix TZ99 (2025): +8.1%
9. Fuji X-S20 (2023): +7.9%
10. Nikon Z9 (2021): +7.8%

A German store published the new Fujifilm prices that will take effect on September 1, 2026. Some of the prices will already be increased on August 1st:

Fujifilm already had several price increases last year.

Note regarding FUJIFILM price adjustment on 01.09.2026

FUJIFILM has announced a price increase for selected camera models effective September 1, 2026. The manufacturer cites rising costs in the semiconductor market and higher manufacturing costs as reasons for the increase.

The affected models are FUJIFILM X-S20, X-E5, X-T50, X100VI and GFX100 II, including their respective variants and kits.

Both the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices and our purchase prices are being significantly increased. Therefore, we will also have to make corresponding price adjustments.

For pre-orders up to and including July 31, 2026, the prices shown in our online shop apply.

Starting August 1, 2026 , we will gradually adjust the prices of the affected products. The complete transition to the new price level will be finished by September 1, 2026 .

For particularly popular models and products with longer delivery times, the price adjustment may take place earlier.

Anyone currently planning to purchase one of the affected models can therefore still benefit from the currently advertised prices for a short time.

Should unexpected delivery failures or further price increases occur, we reserve the right to cancel purchase requests (orders) or, after prior notification, to offer a price adjustment; this will only be done with your consent, otherwise the order may be cancelled.
