Canon is pushing 3D and XR (VR/AR/MR) imaging again, planning to release a new APS-C camera compatible with VR lenses

As previously reported. Canon is pushing 3D and  XR (VR/AR/MR) imaging again and is planning to release a new APS-C camera compatible with VR lenses according to an article published recently by Newswitch.

Canon currently has the $2,000 RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye 3D VR full-frame lens (Adorama | Amazon | B&H):

Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L dual fisheye lens officially announced

Here is the recap of the article by digicame-info:

  • Canon will expand the range of digital camera models that are compatible with the EOS VR SYSTEM. Previously, three models were compatible, but there are plans to also include cameras equipped with APS-C size sensors, which are smaller than full-frame sensors. The company aims to expand its user base by making low-priced cameras compatible with the system. Tsuyoshi Tokura, senior managing executive officer, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, ``We want to be able to offer multiple options.''
  • A special lens is required to support this system. We plan to release a special lens that can be attached to cameras equipped with APS-C size sensors. Although the specific release date has not been disclosed, ``There is a possibility that it will be released in 2024'' (Senior Managing Executive Officer Togura).
  • In addition to cameras, Canon is also focusing on the XR (general term for VR, augmented reality (AR), etc.) field. Senior Managing Executive Officer Tokura says, ``XR is the direction in which imaging will move,'' and the company plans to strengthen its research and development with an eye to the future.

Additional information on the Canon EOS VR System can be found here.

After the OM-1 Mark II announcement, OM System will bring some of the autofocus improvements to the older OM-1 Mark I model

The online consensus is that the majority of the new OM System OM-1 Mark II camera improvements could have been simply a firmware upgrade. Some reports even indicated that in fact, a planned firmware update was scratched in favor of releasing a new camera (you can sell a new camera for $2,399, but you cannot sell a firmware update):

Rumors: OM-1 firmware update version 2.0 deliberately shelved by OM System in favor of a new Mark II camera

After much scrutiny online, OM System announced yesterday that they will release a new firmware update for the OM-1 Mark I camera that will bring some of the autofocus improvements:

FUTURE FIRMWARE UPDATE PLAN FOR THE OM-1

21 February 2024 | Since the announcement of the OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II interchangeable lens camera on 30 January, there have been many requests regarding the possibility of a firmware update for the OM SYSTEM OM-1 (release March 2022). For this reason, we would like to inform you about our plan for a future firmware update for the OM-1:

Future firmware update plan for the OM-1

The following changes for the OM-1 are planned for autumn this year via a firmware update:

Autofocus: improvement of some AF functions, such as S-AF and C-AF in All-Target mode, to improve the capture of prime subjects.

Usability: Improved usability with the ability to use the trash/delete button as an option for menu access.

Please note the following points:

The update will not include new features introduced with the OM-1 Mark II, such as Live GND and AI Detection AF for people.

It will only offer some improvements in AF performance and therefore the new AF performance of the OM-1 will not be the same as the OM-1 Mark II.

We will continue to offer products and services that enrich your photography experience.

* Details are subject to change (OM System)

OM System recently announced a new OM-1 Mark II camera with a few minor updates like improved autofocus, Live GND (Graduated ND), etc. Here is a report from pen-and-tell – they think the OM-1 camera firmware updated version 2.0 was deliberately shelved by OM System so they can sell a new Mark II camera with a minimum effort and expenses (yes, the camera does have a larger memory, but the rest of the improvements could have been done with a firmware update – see for example what Nikon could fit in their latest Z8 firmware update):

Apart from the larger buffer (hence the 128 ND filter) and the rubberised dials, all the “features” [of the OM-1 Mark II] could of course also be added to the OM-1 via a firmware update. According to my information, this FW update is also available, they just prefer to sell the OM-1 II. There will only be a firmware upgrade for the OM-1 if the shitstorm from long-time users gets too big, otherwise it will remain stowed in a drawer.
