Xbox's New Disc-to-Digital Program Gives Physical Games a Digital Future

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: For decades, console owners have faced a choice between the convenience of digital downloads and the permanence of physical game discs. Soon, Xbox owners will be able to get the best of both worlds for thousands of supported titles as part of a newly announced disc-to-digital program. The program -- announced today ahead of testing for Xbox Insiders starting August 31 -- will let players claim a "digital entitlement" for "most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games" simply by inserting the disc into a console and launching it. That game will then be playable completely digitally, without the need to ever insert the disc, as long as you (or a member of your family account) is logged in. The digital entitlement will also allow access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere (for play on PC) and Xbox Cloud Gaming, for supported titles. Microsoft says that your physical disc will "continue to work exactly as it always has" after the digital entitlement is claimed. But before you get any ideas, the fine print on the announcement mentions that there is only "one revokable license per game disc," so if you resell that disc or loan it to a friend, that digital entitlement could be transferred to a new account when someone else puts it into their console. A leaked memo obtained by the Verge earlier this month suggests that publishers have to actively opt in to allow their game discs to activate digital entitlements, which could explain why "most" but not all Xbox One and Series X titles are supported. Windows Central separately suggests, based on discussion with unnamed sources, that "some discs may be incompatible due to how they were manufactured at the time," which could explain why original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not being discussed for the program. "While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come," said Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald.

Microsoft Blames Windows Gaming Issues On RGB Lighting Devices

BleepingComputer reports: Microsoft says ongoing issues causing games to crash or fail to launch after installing the August 2026 Windows updates may be caused by peripherals with RGB lighting. As Microsoft explained when it confirmed it's investigating on Wednesday, this known issue affects games like ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls, and The Finals on systems running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2... "[Peripherals or internal device components with RGB lighting features] may install drivers or code components with file names similar to inpoutx64. Microsoft MVP Creates Site to Remind You of All the Brands Redmond Replaced

Microsoft MVP Loryan Strant has created the Microsoft Rebrand Registry, cataloging 72 Microsoft products and the 158 names they've had over the years. His analysis finds that Microsoft product names survive an average of two years and eleven months. The site even predicts which products are most likely to get renamed next, "by considering the amount of time the current name has applied, prior names, and the frequency with which Microsoft changes names of products in the same family," reports The Register. "That methodology led him to suggest an 'elevated' likelihood of name changes for the Azure App Service, Azure SQL Database, Azure DevOps, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service." From the report: Readers may remember that Strant has also created the site Let Me Correct That For You, which lists the exact names of Microsoft products -- an effort he told The Register he thinks is useful because Microsoft in its wisdom uses Camel Case for names like PowerPoint but went with conventional capitalization for Copilot. Another of his sites immortalizes Microsoft cloud product logos. He's also created HumbledandHonored.com, a site that generates social media posts MVPs can use to announce they have earned or retained Microsoft's awards. Strant told The Register that the Rebrand Registry came about after some banter between himself and other MVPs, during which the topic of Microsoft's many product name changes came up. He decided to do something about it.

Microsoft has been steadily scaling back its China presence, closing at least 15 branch offices and joint ventures over the past five years as Beijing favors domestic software. U.S. export controls also make it harder to grow its cloud and AI businesses, leaving the market with relatively little economic upside. Reuters reports: Microsoft took a major hit from the erosion of trust between Washington and Beijing, the five people said. China has since 2017 pushed the use of domestic software, which Beijing sees as more secure and whose quality is increasingly competitive with Windows and Office. U.S. restrictions, including export controls on advanced technology, have meanwhile hindered efforts to scale Microsoft's lucrative AI and cloud businesses in China. [...] Microsoft ultimately decided to remain because it had carved out a profitable business servicing Chinese companies like TikTok owner ByteDance, which need Western technology to manage overseas operations, according to three people familiar with the matter. The company also believed that it needed a presence to maintain access to China's world-class engineering talent, two of them said. Microsoft had also cultivated a relationship with the government that is among the deepest of any tech company, its former China head Alain Crozier told Reuters. "Because of the geopolitics ... some days it's a little bit harder, but we never had a crisis," he said. A Microsoft spokesperson did not address questions about the firm's deliberations on its China business but said it operates in a regulatory "environment that applies to every international supplier" and that it remains committed to the Chinese market. The state of Microsoft's China business reflects market competition, regulatory demands and technological trends, the company said.

Microsoft Is Combining Its Copilot Apps Ahead of a 'Super App'

Microsoft is merging its consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps ahead of a broader "super app" launch later this year. "Both personal and work accounts will be moved to the new unified app, which recycles the 'Microsoft Copilot' name but features an updated app icon," reports The Verge. "The single app also means there won't be two annoying Copilot icons in the system tray or taskbar anymore." From the report: The updates are intended to be a technical milestone in preparation of the "super app" Microsoft is planning to launch later this year, so this is laying the foundations of what will be changing for Copilot products. A worldwide rollout for the mobile and web apps will start in "mid-August," according to Microsoft, with a rollout to Windows and Mac apps set for "mid-September." Mobile app users will be prompted to download the new Copilot app, and the updates will start appearing for some Windows Insiders this week. What changes you'll see will depend on which Copilot apps you're already using. Existing Microsoft Copilot users will be moved to the updated version, along with your chats and content, while Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will see "minor navigation changes," the updated Copilot icon, and gain access to Copilot chat. If you already use both apps, Microsoft says your chats and content will be merged to a single updated Copilot app, but notes that chats, content, and data will remain separate between account types within the app. Microsoft says enterprise security, compliance, and government controls will remain unchanged and core Copilot features will remain free, though usage limits may vary. Podcasts, Deep Research, and Group Chat content will, however, be discontinued after August 18. The company also says Shopping and Copilot Health "may be temporarily unavailable" during the transition.

Installer Windows 11 sans compte Microsoft est un vrai problème depuis que l’éditeur cherche à enfermer de plus en plus ses clients dans son univers. Ce matin j’ai réceptionné des ordinateurs reconditionnés sous Windows 11 prêts à être réactivés. Ils étaient installés avec les dernières mises à jour du système. Ce sont des machines que je commande pour mon association Ateliers Geeks qui propose des activités ludiques et créatives en utilisant l’électronique et l’informatique pour initier les plus jeunes mais aussi les adultes à plein de choses : programmation, montage vidéo, modélisation, animation, impression 3D et j’en passe… D’ailleurs si vous avez de vieux PC portables qui traînent, vous pouvez me contacter, on est toujours preneurs.

La plupart des machines qu’on achète sont des engins reconditionnés de chez AFBshop, cela permet d’avoir des machines en bon état et garanties pour un excellent prix. La majorité d’entre elles sont livrées avec un Windows 11 préinstallé. Comme ce sont des engins reconditionnés, ils sont livrés avec une image de Windows 11. Le numéro de série de Microsoft est « tatoué » dans la machine, celle-ci est donc reconnue comme ayant droit à sa licence directement par Microsoft. 

L’engin demande juste de finaliser l’installation en choisissant la langue, la disposition du clavier, ce genre de choses. Elle réclame également un accès à Internet et, une fois cela fait, de se connecter à un compte Microsoft en ligne. Et c’est là que ça coince pour moi, car les machines qu’on utilise à l’association n’ont pas besoin d’un compte Microsoft en ligne, au contraire, un compte local est bien plus adapté pour nous. Et c’est ici que les problèmes étaient censés commencer.

Pour une fois, l’installation de l’image de Windows 11 était la plus récente disponible. La majorité des machines que je reçois en reconditionné sont équipées d’une « vieille » image de Windows 11 et il faut donc faire plusieurs mises à jour de suite pour la mettre à niveau si on veut garder le système. Ici ce n’était pas le cas mais… cela laissait entendre que la méthode habituelle pour se passer d’un compte Microsoft en ligne était censée ne plus marcher.

Depuis plusieurs mois, je lis que la bonne vieille méthode de la ligne de commande « start » pendant l’installation n’est plus active. Que cela ne fonctionnerait plus. Je me voyais donc déjà réinstaller une vieille image de Windows 11 depuis une clé USB ou d’en préparer une nouvelle avec l’utilitaire Rufus, avant de me résoudre à relancer toutes les laborieuses mises à jour, une par une. Quand vous avez plusieurs machines à traiter, ce n’est vraiment pas une expérience agréable. Alors, par acquit de conscience, j’ai tout de même tenté la méthode « start » ce matin et, contre toute attente, elle est toujours parfaitement fonctionnelle.

J’ai pourtant lu des tartines de messages annonçant que cela ne fonctionnait plus.

Je récapitule la méthode « start » pour installer Windows 11 sans compte Microsoft

Au moment de l’installation, quand le système vous demande de vous connecter à Internet ou même après au moment où Windows vous invite a créer u compte Microsoft ou à renseigner le vôtre, il faut procéder comme suit :

  • Appui simultané sur la touche Shift + F10 ce qui ouvre le terminal de Windows.
  • Clic dans la fenêtre du terminal pour le sélectionner.
  • Entrée de la ligne : « start ms-cxh:localonly » puis appui sur la touche Entrée.

Windows bascule alors sur la méthode d’installation d’un compte local qui va vous demander uniquement un nom et un mot de passe. Éliminant l’obstacle du compte Microsoft. Le reste de l’installation est classique avec les choix habituels de gestion des données, etc.

Je ne sais pas pourquoi la rumeur d’une fin de cette possibilité d’exploiter cette méthode « start » est apparue. Ou peut-être qu’il s’agit de licences « particulières » de Windows 11 mais sur une licence officielle Pro ou Home, cela fonctionne toujours parfaitement. C’est simple et cela se fait en 30 secondes.

Microsoft a demandé à Apple, via le portail d'interopérabilité imposé par le DMA, de pouvoir synchroniser le presse-papiers d'un iPhone avec un PC Windows. Apple a accepté et détaille sa solution technique : un système d'extensions qui traite le PC comme un accessoire appairé. Il devrait être déployé avec iOS 28 entre 2027 et 2028.

Microsoft shares surged as much as 17% after reporting 43% growth in Azure revenue, putting the company on track to add a record $490 billion in market value in a single day. Bloomberg notes that it "would eclipse Nvidia's $440 billion addition, following President Donald Trump's announcement of a 90-day tariff pause last year, as the biggest ever." From the report: The nearly $500 billion jump is larger than the market capitalization of roughly 96% of S&P 500 stocks, data compiled by Bloomberg show. It's also bigger than the combined value of the benchmark's 44 smallest members, which includes companies like Domino's Pizza Inc., Clorox Co. and Hasbro Inc. Microsoft's one-day add in value also dwarfs many of the world's other equity markets. South Africa, Turkey, Finland and Vietnam all have total stock market values that are less than what the software maker is set to add on Thursday.

Microsoft Responds to LG Monitors Installing McAfee Ads On Windows

LG is removing a McAfee pop-up ad from its LG Monitor App Installer after criticism that some LG monitors were silently installing the app through Windows Update and showing ads on every boot. Microsoft says LG agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up, but the broader issue remains: Windows allows certain peripheral companion apps to install automatically without notifying users. Ars Technica reports: Following Gamers Nexus' video, a Microsoft representative stated that the LG Monitor App Installer will no longer show pop-up ads for McAfee. In response to a social media post about the app, Pavan Davuluri, EVP of Windows and devices at Microsoft, said this week: "We've connected with the team at LG and as an immediate next step, they have agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up from their app. We appreciate LG working with us toward a shared goal of a better experience for our mutual customers. We will keep improving here with our ecosystem partners." As mentioned, some LG monitors appear to have been installing LG Monitor App Installer onto Windows computers for months. Publication Windows Latest noted that the app recently got an update, "and its changelog mentions McAfee as an additional app," which could be what prompted more people to see the ads... and then complain about them. However, the removal of McAfee doesn't address the problem of a peripheral installing ad-pushing software onto people's computers. Users have been finding LG Monitor App Installer and its ads on their systems without LG ever showing a prompt or asking for permission. LG has some of the most expensive computer monitors available. Paying, in some cases, over $1,000 for a monitor that ends up forcing ads onto Windows is disruptive and a privacy concern. Once the app is installed, "LG technically possesses permission to use 'all system resources,'" as well as to "collect geolocation, device data, online activity, contacts, user credentials, transactions, and more," [editor-in-chief of Gamers Nexus, Steve Burke] said.

Donc s'il faut intervenir sur un poste de travail ou un serveur de l'armée, c'est généralement un ingénieur chinois qui s'en occupe. 😂
